    Never would I think I would actually not defend, or bash a up and coming concept. I was beyond in shock of the service, and food. I was trying to keep this to a email to ownership but on the the website there is no contact Info. Unfortunately I have to resort to this bitch ass crap. Not only did me and my family wait 30 min for a F-ing sandwich. their were 3 people inside , however none of them were waiting on a order. I did include a photo of my Shit sandwich. Look. When it's busy I get it. I will wait, but when there is 3 people and you are giving me microwave bacon, unmelted cheese store bought turkey brown avocado bread from Von's and charge extra.... I'm going to be pist. So if you need free wifi and a canned beer do your thing, need a bite to eat I wish you luck. Not only am I disappointed but I am extremely pist and personally have no intention of going back. To not be a complete prick the main wall with the toy soldiers is kind of cool.

    Ordered a latte here . The barista did a fine job of it but the beans selected are inferior to the beans used when this place was filter. There is a strange after taste that is unpleasant and I guess it's something that bird rock does with their beans or their choice or beans. You can get a better latte down the street at Calabria but they're not open late.

    Coffee is always awesome...and the reviewer expecting more than two types of coffee should probably go to 7-11...at least the coffee here tastes like coffee. I drive down from UTC to work here, and it's always worth it.

    Nice staff, good coffee, open sitting. Free wiFi. Breezy and comfortable. With a beer menu. Hello. No complaints. I feel like the other yelpers hating on this place appear to miss the old coffee shop, Filter, or are looking for some sort of fine dining coffee shop. Recommendation: get over yourself, go find Filter, and/or just simply change your attitude and find a way to appreciate the good this place has to offer. It's not Filter or LeStats, it's Young Hickory. And it's a cool place if you're cool enough to see that.

    I love this place especially for studying. The coffee is good, although I wish they had different/larger sizes besides a regular mug. I also wish that they served their ice coffee in something other than a plastic water cup. This place is huge, and they have plenty of seating. It's also very open and has noise, but it's not distracting. All the employees are super nice, and the service is great. I really enjoy their food, all panini's are delish along with the tomatoe soup. I branched out and tried their Greek salad, which always looks so good. I was disappointed in it. They put what looked like 2 whole heads of romaine, that weren't cut up or chopped up. It was then drenched in dressing and the extra Turkey I ordered along with it had 4 small little slices on it. Trying to cut it was quite comical. So other than their below par salad which is easily fixable, this place is great! It's nice to have a good study/coffee place nearby. And although I've never tried their beer, they look like try have a great wide selection.

    What a wonderful concept in this corner of North Park! I didn't get any drinks here, but I am still a HUGE fan. Cna't wait to give it a 5 star review once I actually try soemthing from there. The concept is simple. Coffee, canned beers and tasty food. With wi-fi. Whats not to like?! Wish they would replace most of the big chain coffee places around town. They have a nice selection of canned beers including all the Ballast Point beers, Dale's and Saint Archer. Another good local spotlight!

    Love coming out here for some great beer and food! The servers are all very welcoming and kind. My favorite is the lox bagel and the pilgrim sandwiches Soo amazing ! The tea selection along with the beer selection is great!The acaí bowl is also a great morning pick me up! They have wifi and great music while it's quiet enough to get some work done!

    Eeeek! Went tonight to this place and there was a HUGE cockroach running along the wall, everyone started freaking out! Disgusting! I ordered a panini but I regretted it knowing they have cockroaches! Also, they were out of soup... but now I am glad because its probably cockroach soup... I won't be coming back here... can't trust this place after this incident.

    I work remotely so this one of my favorite places to set up shop and get work done. It's also a great place to meet with friends and grab coffee and from their wide selection of beer. Coffee and beer? All is good!

    I agree with the guys review below me.... This place is super cute and I am a coffee aficionado, so I drove down to check it out and get some work done. I waited at least 7 minutes by the front counter, as both of the girls working were in the back doing something ... When the girl came out there was no apology or mention of "sorry to make you wait".... I had half decided to leave by this point but that would be silly since I had driven so far. Ordered a vanilla latte and just asked to have it remade (which I never do)... It tasted watered down. Three stars because this place is cute, minus two for the service and beverage.

    I was pleasantly surprised by Young Hickory. I love the ambience. The place is very well-lit, so this is great for studying (compared to other well-known study spots that I had to bring my own lamp to). I also love the wallpaper that looks like a dream-library and the chairs with stability balls are pretty fun too. There are countless micro-brews to choose from. The beers are served in the can so you can remember what you ordered, and also appreciate the unique art on each can (I happen to think this is pretty cool). I also love that they serve espresso drinks here. This is great, especially if you happen to be on a hiatus from alcohol, but your friends are not.

    Large, gorgeous North Park café. Although the coffee is merely decent, there's a variety of beers and a modest food selection available too. There's also plenty of space to spread out, and lots of power ports everywhere. Great atmosphere, with artfully decorated surroundings. Good for groups and solo workers alike.

    I'm BAAAAAAAAACK. I really dig the music shuffle here. Broken Bells and Arcade Fire today has been most excellent. The iced coffee is really tops. It's so refreshingly smooth! The staff has always been kind to me :) You'll probably find me at my favorite spot .. standing right up front near the power plug, beside the open garage door windows. Love the fresh breeze and the table being just tall enough for me to work standing :) ( It helps SOOO much when I feel a little on the sleepy side ) WIth just a three block walk from my apartment and my favorite perch, I keep coming back here and I like what's been done compared to the old Filter! Wifi is free, there's a .30 surcharge on low credit card charges, and there's an A/C wall unit above the door in. Parking is the usual North Park deal, so walking is recommended. That's my story. You can stick to it.

    This morning my partner and I sat down to enjoy a quick brunch at this place. I had the Acai Bowl which was a lovely assortment of sweet fruit and granola over a deep purple acai and peanut butter purée. They source their coffee from Bird Rock in La Jolla, which with the help of their talented baristas makes for an exquisite cappuccino. The crowd is mostly composed of young students on laptops or deep in book studies. The vibe is pretty hip and modern, along with the music and the decor. Highly recommended!

    Yay! Favorite place to study.... AND IT HAS BEER! GOOD beer! (gtfo, corona!) If only it wasn't so far from UCSD, and was 24/7... :P Love the atmosphere here. Very great lighting (something that's important to me-- Lestats is too dark). Love the decor here. It's hipster, but very "smart" as well. Plenty of seats, plugs, and the internet is fast! There's also two large "picnic" benches for bigger groups. The few times I've been here, there are always people studying or having meetings. Never gets too loud and everyone seems super friendly. I'd recommend this place to anyone!

    This is one of the few places in SD that you can have a beer and just kick it. They offer FREE wifi, more than a handful of beer selection, and delicious chocolate croissants. To be honest, I love this place because it has helped me graduate from the most stressful time of my life (college). Of course, the baristas didn't help me on my flashcards or anything but Young Hickory did help provide me a home away from home. It was sort of a safe haven from the stressful environment that was brewing at home as well as school. There's no judgement here even if you have been binge watching for the past four hours or looking for spare change in your purse. Plus, it allowed my brain to focus on the better things in life like good coffee, cool music, and awesome people. I definitely recommend Young Hickory for anyone of all ages and its a great place for studying, writing your next bestseller, or catching up with old friends. Good vibes all around.

    People that know me won't understand on why I'm reviewing this place because its a coffee shop and I don't do coffee. I don't drink coffee, not even cold or hot, I don't believe on coffee. Coffee is the devil.. lol BUTTTTTTTT.... I think coffee was discovered to be put on my BEER!!! ahhh beer, yes beer is good. Like the great Benjamin Franklin said "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" . This place is for me IMO the new model type of a modern Coffee shop. They have a great craft beer selection all in tin cans and some of the best sandwiches and paninis, free Wifi and they also have really good pastries and other small treats. Really good seating selection and a big open layout helps attract different people to work or study, and its pet friendly... So next time you are doing some homework, don't drink a nasty cup of joe, have a beer and man up son!!! PS My wife loves coffee and says they have really good coffee but drink beer or coffee but preferably beer, lots of beer.

    Update: I've been back a few more times. I don't know if my first 4 visits were just flukes, or if the staff got a pep talk, or what, but I've experienced a complete 180 in terms of customer service. Smiles, friendly welcomes, casual conversation... I'm no longer made to feel like I'm an inconvenience when I walk in. Now I can enjoy my favorite chai latte and actually like the place serving it! My only hesitation in not relinquishing that 5th star is that this place is still the priciest coffeehouse in the North Park neighborhood. At least now their customer service warrants the upcharge. Old review: The good: best chai latte I've ever had, hands down. The not-so-good: I live just around the corner and have been in 4 or 5 times now, and almost every time the staff has just been really condescending. With the exception of one guy who was friendly that I chatted with a bit one day, I've almost always encountered staff who make me feel like I'm inconveniencing them as I order. Also, this place does not cater to customization. I asked for the breakfast sandwich to be made on one of the delicious-looking croissants they had in the case, and since that's not one of the official options (bagel or bread), the cashier said bluntly, "I'll have to charge you for the sandwich AND the croissant." A latte and smallish breakfast sandwich ended up costing $14 - pretty excessive for the minimal effort they had to put into it. I really like the space, love the food and coffee, but it's just not a friendly business. Unfortunate, because I would spend so much more time there since it's the closest coffeehouse to me.

    Probably one of my favorite coffee shops in town. Great location, parking is usually not an issue. You can usually find a spot in the neighborhood behind if you want to stay longer than the 2 hour parking limits on the street out front. Coffee is always good, I've had some of the food items and they are always fresh and delicious. If you go during the week you'll likely be sharing the spot with many young people on their laptops studying or doing work. Everyone is always very courteous and noise is never an issue even when it's busy. I seem to always get a lot of work done when I come here which is probably why I keep coming back.

    LOVE this place and the staff. it is an awesome place to study, take friends, or just grab a drink (coffee and beer). Their dirty chai with almond milk is AMAZING! My boyfriend and i go here all the time and always take friends that come into town. They have food, breakfast and lunch items and are open late. Sometimes the food takes a little long, but just be patient, the girls are doing everything themselves. The also allow WELL BEHAVED pups which is a super bonus for when we take the pup on a walk and want to grab some food and coffee on the way back home.

    This is a great place to study or to meet up with friends for coffee/tea/beer. They have plenty of seating and outlets under almost all the tables. This place has becomes pretty popular and even though there are plenty of tables, it can still be difficult to find a seat. Overall, I love the atmosphere of this place, they have great service and they have a large selection of drinks to chose from.

    I like to come to Young & Hickory, order a Bird Rock coffee and a bagel, and people watch while I doodle in my Molskine. No joke, I've done that before. I know what category that puts me in, but Y&H has a perfect environment for taking a second to go a bit slower. They have plenty of outlets to plug in your computer if you want to get a little work done, and every time I've stopped by, there has been at least one table of people having some kind of business meeting. You can order from a wide array of beers in cans, and they have a good variety of food options. I like getting the lox bagels with tomatoes - it's super filling and they use fresh dill. So much yum! Only downside is that they don't have pour overs - the fact that they have Bird Rock cancels that out though. When you're done, they have a little bin for your basket/cup by the sugar station, so you can tidy up your area. That's also where the self serve water is if you don't want to buy a boxed water. The employees are also all really nice, and when it's slow, they always take a moment to chat. I come back to Y&H as often as I can for the people, the food, and the environment.

    The Acai bowl was a hit. Delicious and fresh and very filling. The iced latte was unfortunately a little too weak for my liking, as though the do not use a concentrated pull of espresso, but just add ice to a regular latte. Wait times can be long in the mornings when it's busy, but the staff is very nice.

I was driving by a couple of weeks ago and spotted Young Hickory but didn't stop since I had places to be but made a mental note to myself to check it out later. I was headed over to my buddy's workshop to pick up something for the wife (on Ray street check it out) *shameless plug alert! I asked him about it and he said he'd been there to get coffee and but not beer. He said the coffee wasn't that great (he's a huge coffee nerd, I'd got so far as to say a coffee elitist) so I'm not sure what that says about their coffee. It might not be good enough for him but it might be good for the more common of coffee drinkers.. I personally don't even drink coffee.. (heartburn just doesn't allow me). I love the smell though.. I also read the same thing in many of the reviews as well. I also spoke with a couple of other coffee nerd friends and one like it and the other didn't so who knows. You'll have to find out for yourself. I drink beer! A couple of weeks later the Wife and I were headed over to Hess Brewery and Thorne Street Brewery for some beers on our way we were detoured by the Toy Parade so we ended up parking right outside of Young Hickory and we had time to kill before the breweries opened so why not? We walked in and checked the place out. It's pretty large, lots of seating, lots of places to meet up and study. It was already some what busy when we arrived around 11. The Wife and I ordered a couple of beers and I started to talk to own of the employees about the place, the idea behind it, and how things were going. I personally liked the idea, canned beer, no glasses, no clean up, lowers cost.. not a bad idea at all. They have a pretty good inventory of beers not to mention a few local beers as well. I really liked the place and the friendliness of the employees as well. They were a pleasure to talk to. I even purchased a couple of koozies and shirt. Later on our way back from the breweries we stopped back in to use the restroom and the place was packed. Maybe the coffee is good after all? I'll definitely be back for some more beer.. not coffee.. you're on your own for that!

    Went out with the gal pals for a cup of coffee and a good time. Young Hickory was pretty cool. The prices were decent and the staff was friendly. The dinner menu was a little panini/salad heavy (nothing wrong with that- I'm just not a panini fan and wasn't feeling like a salad). Though we were able to chat without bugging too many people, this place is more of a haven for studying. I wouldn't recommend this for a book club meeting place, or somewhere to get chatty with your pals, but it would be a nice place to curl up with your laptop or a book.

    Huge fan. Young Hickory is the best choice for me whether I need caffeine from coffee, want to wind down with a beer, indulge with good food, hang out with friends or get work done. Cute decor, fun to crush beer cans, various types of seating whether you want to sit at large benches or smaller tables. Pubcakes' Stone Smoked Porter Bar (option to warm up) is like crack and goes soooo well with a good Stout, Porter or coffee. Parking is hit or miss depending upon what time you come.

    For sure one of my new favorite coffee shops! Love the ambiance of a cool laid back place with great breezes from the giant openness of the place! On this morning my husband enjoyed the Shot & Beer (Baba Black Lager) while I had the hot Chai Tea Latte. To eat he had the Yogi Bowl while I had the Acai Bowl - both were perfect! Definitely coming back!!!

    Not a comfortable area of town at all! We were tempted to turn around and leave but we were absolutely suffering with hunger pains. Our first impression was not great...or good. This area of town is crawling...literally on this day...with homeless people and blatantly mentally incapacitated individuals which is a bit frightening in broad daylight with a brand new infant. I would never come back alone. One wall is actually comprised of garage doors which is actually innovative and pleasing to my aesthetic. Bad seating is set in front of where the garage doors open and it makes for lovely open seating...if a run down neighborhood is what you would enjoy looking at while a wheelchair bound, seemingly homeless, individual shouts obscenities and converses with another patron through the window (when not shouting) as said patron blatantly spits chewing tobacco into an overused water bottle. Beyond disgusting to witness while eating. The staff member who took our order was friendly and we greatly appreciate that! We didn't appreciate that our food took about 30 minutes to get to us when it is the sort of joint where you order from a counter and then proceed to wait with the vagrants previously mentioned. My husband and I both ordered a panini and a cup of tomato soup. I had an open faced grilled cheese and my husband had a spicy one with avocado and Tapatio potato crisps on it. Both were enjoyable, good flavor, nice and crispy bread. The soup was on the sweet side but great to dip our paninis in. Fruit bowl was fresh and had a good variety of berries and melon.

    I hit a lot of coffee shops, I need places for late night studying, that have at the very least good coffee. This place has good strong coffee and BEER. My friend introduced me to this place---been hooked ever since. They have simple salads n sandwiches, pastries and a nice selection of coffee. Servers are nice, not super friendly--but friendly enough to give them a good review & not complain about any overly friendly annoying cashiers. The best thing here??? The electrical plugs. If you're against the north wall of the place, every table/bench has a plug about every 4feet. This is a must when you're wanting to study. The wifi has never been slow or down when I've been there, so not sure if they have that issue, at least I don't. Love this spot!

    The best cafe I've seen in San Diego for a while, a cut above the slue of cafes that have opened up in North Park recently. The espressos are perfectly pulled with a great crema. The food is creative, healthy and affordable, with a few decadent treats thrown in. Best of all, though, is the staff! They are cheery and friendly when I stagger in at 7am. Keep up the good work!

    So far I'm digging it more than the prior business (Filter), but it's based on one visit and one beer so take it with a grain of salt, if you must. The ambiance is nice. Not so quiet library as before, but still a place that works for getting some studying/working done. The picnic style tables encourage a communal feel and are perfect for groups who want to gather here. Happy hour from 5-7pm (love the neon sign that lights up telling you so!) gets you $1 off your can of beer. Nice big selection, too. I think I counted a couple dozen choices. I didn't eat, but food seemed outrageously expensive. My friend and I couldn't stop joking about the avocado on toast for $5 (?!).

    I loved the atmosphere here! Very calm and collective. Many people come with their laptops and do work/study while eating/drinking. Very hip and modern place. I didn't come to study, I decided to randomly pop in here one day instead of getting brunch across the street. Good thing I did! The Acai bowl was so good!!! And the coffee is always good.     Let me clarify: Hispter Coffee Shop does NOT equal to good coffee. I'm not sure if the hype is caused by people too occluded by the artsy decor and quaint space but I was not a fan. Since this place is around the block from me and was one of the few places open early on Saturday mornings, I decided to check it out. I ordered a vanilla soy latte and an acai bowl. The soy latte was the most disastrous mess I've ever tasted/seen. The consistency of the top foam was like mushy half coagulated bone marrow with some immensely diluted espresso water underneath. It tasted sour, so I thought the soy used had spoiled. This day was a landmark for me, as it was the first time I've ever told a barista I didn't like the drink (I usually fake a smile and force myself to drink it). Thankfully, the barista was extremely nice about it and offered to make it with almond milk and explained that soy milk curdles. I later researched this topic since I've never received a curdled soy latte in my frequent lactose intolerant driven orders. It's apparent this place just didn't have the technique/knowledge of warming soy milk without creating quasi tofu down yet. I replaced my order with a regular coffee since there's no way you can go wrong with Bird Rock Roasted coffee. Boy, I was wrong. The coffee was very acidic and sour which usually results from under-extracted beans. How could something so good go so wrong?? Now, the acai bowl was just as disappointing. With large frozen chunks of acai puree, frost bitten frozen fruit, and watery liquid, I'm questioning if the blender was even on. I will just go to Senor Mango for my acai and fruit needs. I think the appeal of this place really revolves on the idea of bringing (back?) canned craft beer to compete with beer on tap, but I think I'm too hipstered out.

    Love it! Ordered a black ice tea and iced coffee and received excellent service. The black ice tea with a hint of strawberry fields is so incredibly refreshing and the flavor doesn't overpower the tea flavor. Their ice coffee had a good bold coffee flavor that doesn't come off too strong. I love it! Definitely a relaxing place to hang out, though most people are studying. I'll definitely be back to check out more of their selection.

    I used to come here when it was Filter and I didn't particularly like the seating, but I did like the atmosphere. It's finals time and I've decided to try out YH. I ordered an iced-coffee and an acai bowl. The coffee is o.k. but the acai bowl is more like acai soup... it's sooo runny! What happened to blending and thickening? Otherwise, the music is pretty good and the tables/chairs are awesome. The chairs at Filter were kind of gross--I didn't know what disease I would get from the fabric....but I do miss those big comfy chairs that were near the front. I'm scoping out the yoga ball chairs and I'll definitely have to try to that out when I don't feel like making a fool of myself. -1 star because although it's an improvement on Filter, there is still NO air-conditioning! Come on people--it's freakin' hot! For the money you're charging on food and drinks I'm sure you could splurge on some cool air! Puhleeezz!

    Seating can be scarce especially if you're going in the evening when all the college students are doing homework but the ambiance and chai latte is great. I usually grab a bite to eat while I'm there and enjoy their power toast with bacon or their ceasar wedge salad.

    This is my go to spot for weekend work which unfortunately is a norm for me. It makes my work go by so much quicker than at other places. I love this place for so many reasons... 1. You can get coffee and beer at the same place. WHAAAAAT? I start with a latte and end with a Modern Times Lomaland with a bit of The Pesky in between. I could stop right there but I will continue on with my love affair. 2. The people working there actually enjoy their job and greet you with a smile. I also love that they recognize me, they appreciate and try to save me from my addition to work... 3. People watching. It adds a creativity element to my work. How can you not be inspired by the multitude of different people coming in and walking by? This is in the heart of North Park so there is never a lack of oddity in the air that I love so much. 4. The window seats. Its so great to work in a spot where you can access the fresh air and sunshine but still have my laptop plugged in and out of the sun so I can see. The open garage door windows are my favorite place to sit. 5. Dogs. I love that owners tie up their dogs at the window and it almost is like they are inside with you rather than hanging outside by themselves. Well there are 5 reasons why I love Young Hickory. I hesitate to write such reviews for fear that when I go to get my window seat it will be taken, however I cannot bear to live in silence anymore.

    I've tried to go here several times to grab coffee and do some work but literally EVERY TIME the place is jam packed with nowhere to sit. They should really put more seating or maybe put a time limit on their Wi-Fi. They are leaving money on the table. I'm at the point that I will not even try going back again. I'll stick with Claire De lun. I casually mentioned something about my frustration with wanting to try them out but never having enough seating and she apologized in a very unsympathetic, "I don't care" attitude. I will never again waste my time trying to find parking here.

    Went there to catch up with a few people after a stroll in the city, I arrived at 6:30PM Or so and was pretty hungry so I went for a A sandwich with chips 8,95$, the beer during happy hour around 3$. Took me some time to decide what to order but I decide to go for the avocado and pepper jack sandwich (of which I can't remember the name unfortunately). The beer was an Indie Pale Ale which I chose among an incredible number of beers I didn't know, but the cashier/waiter told me it was a good light beer (among two others but it was the less alcoholic and I had to drive). Everything was rather tasty (it was my first time trying pepper jack though, which is quite hot and caught me off guard). The beer was nice as we'll, I'm glad he advised me to try this one. The rest of the crowd (beside us) was mostly Mac users with coffee/tea so I believe this place is more like a coffee shop for many people. But the decor is cool and so is the music. Quite a good place overall. Nothing to complain about, except maybe the pricing ?

    I really wish Yelp did half stars because it was up to me I'd give this place a 4.5 but I rounded up because it's DELICIOUS. The only reason I'd prefer not to give it a full 5 is because of price. The coffee and what not is typical price for the most part but those paninis?! $8.95 for a panini with chips?! It was sooo good and we got nice a full but damn.....9 bucks for a sandwich?! For our two paninis and two ice blended mochas it was $30. EEEK! but onto the good... DELIIIIIICIOUUUUS!!! We both got "the berto" which consisted of guac, cheese, kettle chips, and tapatio infused bread. Sounds weird but it's most definitely not. If it wasn't for the price I'd probably get one everyday! Our mochas were pretty good too. Nice and chocolatey (possibly a little too chocolatey if you're not into sweets like my wife). The ambiance was typical for the neighborhood. Nice positive vibes (good old hipster north park). It seems like a pretty awesome place to just hangout and people watch. A lot of people go to study. I don't know how they do it because they have a wide variety of beers soooo I'd probably be drunk within the hour but that's just me. If you feel like splurging on a sandwich this is definitely the place to go. You will not regret it! I can't wait to go back!!!

    I love living around the corner from this place. Having coffee and sitting on an open window is how every person should spend at least one morning a week. Every person that works here has as awesome personality and seem to have a good time while there. It's always stellar to go to a place you love and feel the positive energy. No disappointments in the caffeine realm: expresso shots, black coffee, dirty chai's are all killer. The local beer selection is hard to compete with too: think a mini Bottlecraft only you get to open the beer and drink it there. I've had few sandwiches and breakfast items and still no complaints. Well, take it back; the gluten free toaster pastry is...hmmm...interesting. With a few coffee spot options within walking distance this is by far my favorite.

    It's a coffee shop with beer, and while it can be incredibly busy at times, it's got a good vibe. I find that my creativity is fueled pretty well here, it's also quiet enough to study with gentle mellow music in the background. I would say that you want to avoid this place between 12-3 if you have a computer because it can be hard to find a seat.

    Ok it is just around the corner from where I am staying while visiting San Diego for a few days but I've been in twice for good stretches both times. Once for the beer and once for the coffee. Probably go back for a session that spans both. Love the atmosphere and the service was great. Breakfast sandwich and "The Snob" were both very good and it is clearly a place that had many regulars and cares about quality. The decor and artwork is nice and it has an open feel with many people working on devices but good music at a nice level and some great garage door style windows on the front that open up for the bar seats there so you can watch the traffic on bustling 30th St. If you are in North Park and want beer or coffee or a really good fancy cheese sandwich (and when has anyone not been feeling at least one of these things? Never) go to here.

    I love Young Hickory! I'm working on a masters degree online and it's the perfect place to study away from home. I s'pose this place does get a bit crowded but it's not awful! And I've found that if you're brave enough to ask to share a table, people are always willing to move over a little! The dranks are delicious! I usually switch it up throughout the day between chai lattes and the drip-coffees. I've had a couple of sandwiches and they're decent. I wish they had a few more vegan options though. As I'm a "sometimes" vegan, it doesn't bother me a whole lot. The employees are always fantastic! 'nuff said. The only problem (and it's not even a problem) is that their beer selection is so awesome that I can't help but order a beer after every couple of coffees...not the most effective way to get work done but it sure is fun! Oh! And the music they play is never disappointing.

    i highly dig it. great tables for working, ample outlets, free wifi. delicious acai bowls with fresh fruit. good coffee. good selection of beers- happy hour daily with 1 dollar off beers 5pm-7pm. but i come here to work and drink coffee. they have good low-volume music playing. i think it can range from a great place to meet groups of friends for a beer, a chill first date option, or a place where you can come alone to work. service is good, friendly, and helpful in my opinion. taking off one star just for the slightly pricier food (even my server thinks it's a little pricey). because the doors are all open and there is a garage-style window area open to the street, it can get a tad loud when buses pull up to the bus stop right outside. if that sort of thing bothers you, may need headphones or to find a quieter place.

    This place is full of Macbrats hammering away on Fabebook or Snapchat so it isn't terribly conducive to going there for a chat or something to eat. A good example is the $4 fruit cup; emphasis being it being a cup, not a bowl. If you're broke after buying a $1200 MacBook, and need somewhere to sit over a coffee for three hours then this is the ideal spot for you 'cos the wifi bandwidth is awesome and the friendly staff don't seem to mind terribly.

    Very solid place. They serve Birdrock coffee but slightly overbrew the coffee, making it a little too bitter. And it's slightly more expensive than Subterranean, though that buys outlets at every table, large fans, and a good sound system. The beer selection is great, inventive, and reasonably priced, and my girlfriend says the baked goods are good.

    Coffee & Beer - these were the two words that were staring at me when I settled down to work. It's almost the best part of this place, except that what makes this place one of my favorites is how spacious it is. It's busy, but seating is always available which in my book is 10 stars. The food is a little much, but not complaining. It would be a problem if the sandwiches were mediocre, but enjoyed my iced americano and the pesky. CP ordered the hummus plate, which you could have brought from home. To say the crowd is mainly young hipster students is a bit of a stretch as I've been in the company of a variety of people. Sometimes coffee shop music is drowning where I can't seem to think of anything but the loud music that surrounds me, but it's bearable here. So much that I've been inclined to "Shazam" a few of the songs.

Young Hickory skips playfully through life with interesting canned beer selections, intriguing "shots and a beers" (eg. espresso and a dark lager)... with lovely, carelessly yet joyful open windows that bring the overly hot January Santa Ana winds so dry that they are cracking me overly lotioned skin... Their cappuccino dances across my tongue briefly leaving a whisper not a shout of foamed milk and cinnamon, making me wonder if I have ever felt this complete in my entire life. I leave feeling confused, delighted, amazed and thankful that I didn't stand in line up the street at a certain place that rhymes with candelabra... wondering whether or not I will ever, at my age, get the 45 minutes of my life back from standing in line and being treated like complete cr*p when it is my turn to order.     I have been having my morning coffee here regularly for the past six months. I enjoy the coffee and the staff is exceptional. This last Friday's experience has now caused me to doubt if I will return. For me, a retired dentist, morning coffee is more about the atmosphere and experience. This morning proved to be different. I was enjoying my coffee and talking with a member of the staff when the owner who generally is not present informed me that I was crossing boundaries by having small talk with the employee. Now having run a successful dental practice for thirty five years, I think I understand a little about operating a business. Customer service and personal rap ore are what always makes a lasting impression. I am very sensitive about interfering with the flow of providing a service.This guy is rather young and arrogant and could have cared less if my experience was pleasant. I could not believe how caustic his attitude was toward me. His goal was to sell his products. Now, even though I enjoy the atmosphere and the employees, I must decide if I will have my morning latte elsewhere.

    A SHOT AND A BEER: Espresso and Babablack Lager = $5.95 Young Hickory looks like your typical cool North Park cafe, full of Macbooks and well-groomed men with mustaches, except that it offers a gigantic selection of BEER! Literally, one column on the menu is devoted to coffee, and the next two columns are devoted to beer beer beer. The coffee is bird rock coffee, and is slightly on the watery side, but still good. The chai latte is the sweet and creamy kind made from powder, and in my opinion majorly overpriced. Coffee for here comes in mugs, and iced drinks for here come in a Souplantation-esque tall soda cup. Ambiance wise, the lighting is dim, so if you're not on your laptop, sit by the doors/windows. They have great open-air indoor seating, if that makes sense. There's a really cool shelf of action figures (a la the little green ones from Toy Story), and there are yoga ball chairs scattered around the room - so cool! I must get me one of these yoga ball chairs asap. There's definitely no shortage of outlets, hence all the well-groomed mustached men on computers. Minimum of $5 on credit cards for payment!

    First time coming here and I spent 6 hours of my time studying and having quality time with my best lady friends. Who can deny having coffee & beer at the same time while studying or even just to catch up? Definitely brings out your thinking cap to a whole different perspective. It can be a bit pricey for food, so if you don't want to spend $7-9 bucks on a sandwich or acai bowl, bring your own! The acai bowl was delicious although it was kind of water down just a bit, I think they might've just added too much ice. The beers were fairly priced just like any other bar. If you have a friendly dog companion you don't want to leave at home while you study, you're more than welcome to just bring them with you and have them socialize with other dogs as you might socialize with others too! A down side to the place would probably that there is no A/C and sometimes there tends to be a lot of flies that might be trying to snag some meal time from your leftovers.

    This is such a cute place. I tried a peppermint latte. It was so good and came very fast. I also ordered the pilgrim. The service, however, is what got me. I love a coffee shop just as much as the next person and they are great for getting work done. It was my first time here, and I wanted recommendations from the cashier. She responded in a rude and very condescending tone which I did not appreciate. The other workers I encountered there (since I stayed there for quite some time) were a lot nicer! The space here isn't very small, but it gets packed very quick! The coffee and food were very good, but the service makes me wince a bit. I'm hesitant to come back.

    Two great tastes that taste great together. While greatly fortunate to have Caffe Calabria close at hand, there are those days when one craves the Bird Rock aesthetic. And now we can finally have it without leaving home. Bird Rock coffee and solid cafe grub. Oh, and beer. They have a respectable selection of cans, and there's usually a special pairing of a dark beer and a shot (of espresso) which is tailor-made for a fan of Calabria's Espresso Bomba like myself. So far the food has lived up to the drinks. I've tried a few pastries, all were good, a very decent panini, and perhaps most important, a lox bagel. Lox is one of those items the corporate bagel joints seem to screw up; it's the small indie shops that tend to get them right. Young Hickory's is right in line with that theory. Even though the bagel I think was the last to be sold that day and was beginning to feel it, but the toppings ensured that I finished it and found myself craving another later in the day. Good salmon, of course, but also the smart choice of caper, onion, and dill without the flavorless mass-marketed tomato that usually detracts from your breakfast. One warning to the very tall: low doorway.

    Just had a breakfast stop at Young Hickory and I have to say I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The coffee is excellent (as to be expected) and their food was on point as well. Both the breakfast sandwich and the lox bagel were delicious, though the lack of readily available condiments was a bit interesting. No matter as the squeaky wheel gets the oil, so ask for hot sauce (which definitely added to the bacon breakfast sandwich) and you shall receive. Place was a bit pricey but that's what you get when you're young and hip and have a liquor license. Need to come back for happy hour.

    I like the fact that they encouraged me to open a tab if I was going to stay and hang out. It made me feel more comfortable about embarking on a 6 hour homework sabatical. And my card only had to be charged once for the multiple coffes and snacks. Not the best acai bowl I've ever had but I did like their unique salty granola. Pretty delicious cappuccino and I liked the basic mugs. They made me feel more at home and they are easier to hold.

    I remember driving through 30th, seeing the newly vamped 'filter' with a slight tinge of curiosity. I mean the sign that reads "come in for hot coffee and cold beer" sure sounds like an interesting mix. Well, it's no longer called filter, but the place still retains some of its key characteristics, unfortunately some I wish were weeded out with the re-Branding. THE GOOD: - plug haven. You need to come here to charge your phone? No worries, look under your table and most likely there will be two plugs just for you. Many places are stingy about sharing electricity, I just want to give the owner a huge hug for this. - great fast internet. Just hope people don't abuse it. Nothing bugs me more (well, probably a lot of things) than to have to buy something at a cafe only to find out their wifi is janks. Cudos. - great lighting: hey! I can actually read here without going blind! - airy: something I hated about the old filter was that I felt like I was in a sauna every time I walked in. I mean a cold beer probably would've helped, but having that huge makeshift window/garage opener helps really air out the place! - BEER! I love the option of having beer instead of caffeine at the wee hours of 10-11pm. Coffee and tea would not be a smart choice. THE BAD.. - one thing. Pretty significant for a cafe if you ask me. Coffee here just isn't that great. I like it that they're using bird rock coffee, and that they got a nice espresso machine, but gear and fresh coffee only gets you so far. I would love to see the baristas step up their game and start making better coffee. Go observe and see how bird rock prepares their own coffee! I would love to see cafés, despite not being roasters, take coffee seriously and experiment with various brewing methods, honing on espresso shot pulling, creating good microform, and even impress with some latte art! You guys got the goods, but now it's all in your hands!

    I really love this new, cool coffee shop. The large garage windows, the thick wood tables are great touches. It's a huge improvement from Filter, which used to occupy this space. Young Hickory is revitalizing the neighborhood even more. Bird Rock Coffee Roaster supplies their beans and it tastes great. They should offer their beans for sale too, but maybe I missed it. It was a great idea to have beer as well. Mostly the crowd here works on their ( mostly mac) laptops. It was funny to see everyone lined up and the Apple logo illuminating all in a row. The seating seems plentiful as well as the outlets. The desserts looked great, especially the huge brownie. If they don't have any decaf drip they will make you a decaf Americano and charge you the same.

    When I walk into this place I feel like I'm walking into my favorite local taco shop except the awesome tacos have been replaced with cheesy paninis and instead of horchata, jamaica and PBR there is espresso, tea and PBR. The vibe there is very "be kind or get out," which makes it an awesome place to sit for hours, refilling on tea and enjoying. I'll go back for that. This all being said, so far I've had a macchiato (they somehow manage to screw up Bird Rock Roasters coffee, didn't know that was possible) and a panini (it scraped the top of my mouth, the bread had no flavor and please just don't get me started on the inside) which were both terrible. Still, a place where I feel welcome to sit and read for hours and fill up on tea will keep me coming in.

    TL;DR- Good service, good espresso, great paninis and canned craft beer is a thing! Try the coconut porter :) I continuously strive to hide my business to smaller, non-Starbucks coffee shops, so I was excited when this place first opened up. Unfortunately I've only been here a number of times, but I've throughly enjoyed each one! The service is great, a little snarky, but I like that! They're playful and honest. I've asked for opinions on beer and paninis and they never sugarcoat. Like I said previously, my experience is limited to a handful of visits, but here's what I thought of the items I did try. Their espresso is pretty good, I have only had iced Americanos, but there's no complaint from me! I've also had their avocado something something chip panini and it was amazing! The panini was cooked just right and the crunch of the chips plus the softness of the avocado did me in! They've also got a great selection of craft beer (canned) which I never thought was a thing, but it is! I had a coconut porter that my mouth fell in love with! I definitely suggest checking this place out!

    This coffee shop doesn't understand the meaning of excellent customer service. I went up to the counter and told the cashier: "Before I purchase something I would like to ask you if I could post a flyer here that advertises a talk I'm giving." The cashier told me that they had no place to put flyers up. I was fine with that response and was waiting for her to ask me what I would like to order. She didn't ask me what I wanted to order. Instead, she rudely walked away into the kitchen! I spoke with the owner of this establishment regarding the way I had been treated. The owner actually supported the misconduct of his employee by telling me that he knew that she was not a rude person! He even went so far as to tell me that he had seen everything and that I was basically a liar! I told him that the cashier had treated me disrespectfully by not asking me what I wanted to order. I was at the counter with money in my hand! He then looked at me and said: "I would love to sell you something." I looked at him and said: "That's not going to happen!" and left the coffee shop. It's obvious that the owner and his staff have no interest in providing excellent customer service. I spoke to other people who had visited the establishment who told me that they didn't want to patronize this coffee shop because they had been treated very disrespectfully.

    Young Hickory is a great addition to North Park. Unlike its other coffee-shop counterparts, Young Hickory is the type of place you can enjoy a cup of coffee, stay for a few hours, order a beer, and then stay for a few more hours! I've been twice and have ordered cold brew coffee on both occasions. In terms of quality, the coffee doesn't seem to be as good as Dark Horse or Calabria, but my sense is that most people come here for the vibe.

    Recommend: Heated pub bar Avoid: Sitting near the window at night Good place to study, and I like that I can choose between beer and coffee. I also love that they serve Tea Gallerie Teas (my favorite). Opens late, well lit, clean, with plenty of outlets. Everything is Awesome! (Cue Lego theme song.) Last time I went, I tried their pub bar and it was quite delicious. Their Acai bowl is also pretty good. It could get a little cold near the windows at night, so be sure to bring a sweater as you cram your 10 pager.

    Neat little coffee/beer bar tucked away in the corner of 30th and Polk. I love the hand painted signs and the chill atmosphere that is great for getting some work done. They also have a garage window set up which is great for relaxing and people watching. They serve food-- paninis, appetizers, pastries sort of stuff which are on the pricier side for its quality. I had a tuna panini with chips and it was just alright. Also, their coffee is not the greatest. The cappuccino I had was lukewarm and the taste was so-so. Same with the shot of espresso I had.     Give this place more highly-trained baristas and it will shoot up to five stars in my eyes. Great location, great interior, and with Bird Rock beans and a La Marzocco, great *potential* for coffee. The problem is, if you're walking distance from Coffee and Tea Collective, you're competing with people that really know their coffee, and this is where Young Hickory fell short for me. My espresso gushed out of the machine in less than 10 seconds - the grind was almost certainly not dialed in properly. The result was certainly better than Starbucks or something, but it doesn't hold a candle to the shots of the same beans pulled by baristas at Bird Rock. If you're not picky about espresso, then you'll probably love this place - it's a great study spot with decent coffee and a good looking beer list. If you were excited about the possibility of getting Bird Rock shots without making the trek out to Bird Rock, you will be disappointed.

    Coffee and paninis are good albeit a little over priced. Reason for the two-stars is the lack of a community posting board. Coffee shops and cafés are bastions of cultural exchange. Where young and old can get together and share ideas and grow community relationships. I cannot support a café that for some strange reason refuses to allow its community members to share the cultural/musical/theatrical/artistic happenings of its residents. If I just went for the coffee, I'd go to Starbucks. I go to my local café for culture.

    Young Hickory is our new go-to neighborhood coffee joint! They have a great, open, airy space with lots of seating, including some at the roll up window as well to allow us to get some sun and people watch on 30th Street, with our delicious beverage. They feature Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, who are my new favorite coffee roasters, even after an exhaustive coffee sampling during our recent Portland trip. The service can sometimes be a bit slow on a busy Saturday or Sunday morning due to long lines, but it's always fun to get a chance to review the beers and homebaked goodies they offer and do some people watching. I usually get a cappuccino or drip coffee and they're always perfect. My only wish is that they had different size choices because some mornings I need more caffeine than others!

Very friendly, personable baristas. Reason I didn't give 5 stars: their coffee isn't that great. Which is surprising since they brew BirdRock. My go to is usually an acai bowl or a beer. For anyone that loves cheese...all their paninis are all about the cheese. Literally. They put a layer of cheese on the outside of their grilled cheese - it's genius!! Also, they have yoga ball chairs!! Bouncy time! and Happy Hour every day from 5-7pm. $1 off all beers!! Let's all hang out there.

    If you're looking for a place to (a) study; (b) have a beer; (c) just chill with friends... this is the place to go. A huge improvement from what used to occupy this space, Young Hickory is spacious and has lots of tables and outlets for those that need to get some work done. I'm always looking for new spaces to get some work done because if I were at home, I'd just goof off. Parking isn't too hard to find in the off times just around the neighborhood. They have a pretty extensive list of beers (not on tap) & happy hour is from 5-7 daily. There are also paninis (8.95), breakfast foods (4.95-8.95), and wedges (if you're feeling fancy; 8.95). $.30 charge if you're using plastic under $5. The coffee is alright. I had a iced latte on one occasion at it tasted a bit watery (if you're looking for a good latte/vanilla chai latte head down to calabria down the street). The iced coffee was better. They brew bird rock coffee (if that sort of thing matters to you). With a hipster vibe, you can feel right at home in tight, rolled up jeans and the occasional bowler hat. Young hickory sports a few interesting exercise ball chairs if you're looking for a workout while you sit for hours on end. Am I coming back for the coffee? Probably not. Am I coming back to study? Definitely.

    I spent a lot of time at the North Park Filter. It was cozy, but that coziness turned to oppressive sauna during the summer. So while it was sad to see that neighborhood staple go, there was definitely room for improvement and I think Young Hickory did everything right to make the spot better. Big garage doors seem to be all the rage now, and it makes sense. Finally San Diego bars and restaurants are realizing how amazing the weather is and they should be taking advantage of it more. At Hickory they do a lot to open the space up, bring in lots of fresh air, which is what Filter desperately needed. During the day it almost feels like you're sitting out on a patio. The bar seats by the front windows are a good spot. The coffee is solid. It's not fancy like the Collective or Calabria, but its a solid cup, especially when pour overs at places like the Collective or Dark Horse can be overwhelming at times. The beer selection is also nice. It's good to have alternatives when you want to get out of the house, you already had your daily coffee, and you don't feel like parking in a bar all afternoon. We need more places like Hickory in that respect. This place is super popular with the laptop crowd. The clean design of the place at, least for me, makes me feel like my brain is working better and that I'm more productive. At times everyone in there will be working on their computer so it feels like a co-working space or an office, which is fine if you're doing that too or don't mind. Some people get wound up about that though.

Although I was a little tipsy from Saki Bombs and wine at Splash when I came in to use their restroom, it looked like a really cool place to hang out at. I like the open windows and seating and I will definitely have to check it out further... and order something next time!

    I know North Park has a lot of options when it comes to coffee and beer but nobody ties both of those together as well as this place. All the accompaniments of a coffee shop where you can bring your laptop and get some work done, but not so quiet that you feel out of place drinking a beer with friends. The space alone is worth checking out - bright and creative, a welcome departure from the hole it used to be. Don't sleep on the food either. I had the lox bagel and it went great with my can of Uinta Extra Pale (yes, I drink beer for breakfast). Put this on your list of places to check out in North Park. Oh, and bring some extra cash for some swag. Their shirts are proper, you're going to want one. Well done Young Hick.

    This place has what you want: Great Coffee, Sandwiches Dessert Pastries oh and Beer. Yes you read it, BEER. Oh and the coffee is served in mugs when you order for here The panini's are quite scrumptious and goes well with the drinks. Their happy hour is $1 off Beer, some of which are amazing (depending on your preference for beer). In terms of environment it's a chill, relaxed vibe - but of course if you are here to study then bring some headphones - it hardly ever gets noisy but sometimes you hear people outside and they can get loud. It's a good place to study since they do have WiFi and outlets when you need them. But just like most areas on North Park best to get parking beforehand especially on weekend nights.

I've had the espresso, americano, and cappuccino and they were all great. On top of this they also serve beer! The place had a good amount of seating and space. I really like coming here for an hour or two of studying, I have really been able to focus. It has an open feeling and a really nice casual vibe. The downside is its a little overpriced. However, still one of my favorite spots for a cup of coffee, especially if I am meeting friends and want to have lots of places to sit.

    Do you like to study and drink coffee? Do you like to study and DRINK BEER? This place has created that environment. In fact, I'm doing that right now. Open air. Lots of wooden hickory (I assume) tables comfortably spaced out with their own electrical outlets below. Wooden picnic tables for larger groups. 28 different crafts beers all in cans. Bird Rock coffee roasting. Tea Gallerie tea is f'ing bomb. I haven't tried the food, but they have breakfast bowls/sandwiches, ceasar and greek salads, paninis, and hummus plates. Good looking deserts. When I heard this place was going to turn into a coffee house/craft beer place I was skeptical. But it seems like it really works. I recommend you come here to study and drink a coffee, and then drink a beer to reward yourself.

    I live in the neighborhood. This is the closest coffee shop to where I live, so I had to try it out this morning, one of the coldest mornings in the history of North Park. (Kidding!) Walked in, ordered a small cup of the "Bold" coffee, and it was served in less than a minute. She was friendly, and I was greeted the minute I stepped in the door. She asked if I wanted room for cream in the cup. I like that, because I don't like to have them fill the cup up to the brim with black coffee, it's too hot for me to drink like that. Kudos for having real 50/50 (half and half) there, and simply-labeled recycling and trash containers. It was $2.10 for a small cup of Bold coffee, which did taste pretty good, by the way. However, I was able to get a Large cup of organic coffee at Claire de Lune yesterday for about the same price. I think the price is in line with Caffe Collabria, they are a little more expensive also. I think this coffee is a little stronger though, so it is probably worth it. Almost five stars, but only because of the price, and that's not really that big of a deal because I don't buy coffee every day. I may be back. I will have to see if they have any special deals on bringing your own coffee mug because that is the "green" way to go these days.

    Five stars for the coffee but only one or two stars for the breakfast. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and avocado on an everything bagel and got a flattened asiago bagel with a little bit of egg, no bacon, and unripened avocado. The employees were nice about the mistake, and compensated me with a San Pellegrino drink...overall, I would probably only stop here again to try the microbrews or use their wifi.

    Wow, what an improvement from Filter! This place uses Bird Rock, which is an excellent choice if in-house roasting isn't going to happen. Their baristas are skilled, and I think I've been served more than once by everyone who works there, so my data set is pretty comprehensive :) The beer thing is kind of a weird paring with the coffee concept, though, and for all it's recent hipster cred, I just don't think beer in a can is as good as from a tap (which I realize would require a different licence). Also, I thought their mocha and mexican mocha are too sweet- stick with a latte or capp, though, and all is well.

    Went here two days in a row, I had business in the area and I really wanted to give this place a chance since I've heard good things. To me, this place is another place with a handcrafted rustic hipster aesthetic without the substance. First day I bought a vanilla latte. I sat down, had a sip, and it literally tasted like sweetened milk. I went up and had another shot added. Still, it didn't really compare to other good lattes in town. Then today solidified my opinion. First, why can I only get a drip coffee in one size? Pure hipster elitism, "no one needs more than 12 ounces brah". Not only was it over $2 for a paltry cup of coffee, it was another $1 for a refill while I was dining in. They got 2 stars because despite the price, the Bird Rock coffee was delicious. Second, the breakfast sandwich. Completely bland, anemic microwaved bacon (think Subway), flavorless scrambled eggs minus a little cracked pepper. No herbs at all, no garlic, nothing. The bowl of fruit was tasty but really, they hardly get credit for cutting fruit and it was $5. I think I paid $13-$14 for that breakfast. That's a joke. Admittedly, I'm guilty of paying that much elsewhere at other such establishments but I'm getting something worth the extra cash. It was just so half ass. All that said, the place does look great and I'd stop in for a beer maybe. But if you want coffee and food, keep walking to Cafe Callabria. Kills this place for way less loot.

    I came across Young Hickory while looking to study at Filter ... they had only been open for a week so it was fairly empty. I work in the day and can only study for the CPA exam in the evening- I was stoked at how much spacious it was and how late they closed! One month later, shit is packed! I can't blame everyone wanting to study here though, cool vibe, lots of outlets, great lightening. Coffee is okay... their vanilla lattes don't taste like $3.50 (+ tax) but of course I buy it anyway. The green-tea (w/lemon) is amazing! But again, kind of overpriced. Coconut pub bar is really really good. Con: only one bathroom...wtf? I have a small bladder. Oh and I love the bookcase wallpaper!

    The coolest coffee joint in SD. I LOVE the minimalistic approach with regard to seating and instructions for disposal of trash and what have you, to keep us all in line. The huge garage-like doors that are cranked up to let the air/sun in, are pretty cool, as well as the stools by the open windows, seated along the path of the sidewalk..and unlike MOST coffee joints, the music is always crackin', and very mellow. Its basically, "hipster heaven"...its spotless....and the food and beverages are good enuf. You're not hassled for spending a few hrs there, as long as youve purchased something...its never noisy...and the "help" is cool, albeit not incredibly trained. I remember the little rinky-dink, borderline-seedy coffee joint that was there before YH, when they that tired pool table in the back...and if you hung out there late at night, minding your business, you could bank on being bothered by the scallywag-cockhounds that circled like vultures, coming out of The Crypt, most nights. As long as they keep the restroom spotless and the coffee hot and tasty, theyll have a loyal cust. in me. I'd like to see better trained baristas, but so far, they haven't really done anything to make me get someone in line. BTW, I hear the happy hour is pretty good. Lets see if they can keep up with Cafe Calabrias' and Claire de Lunes. They have a different, more chic model. They'll do well where they are, if they stick to what they know, works.

    This is my favorite coffee shop in San Diego for studying. The staff is friendly, the food is simple but good, and the cushioned bench seating is comfortable (especially since I like to study cross-legged). The music that they play is uplifting yet not too much to detract from concentrating on my studies. I like the openness that the large front windows bring to the space and the general vibe of the typical customers YH attracts. Since I am usually studying most evenings after I come home from work (working on my PhD), the atmosphere supports getting things done while still feeling like I am out and about versus being stuck at home. I also enjoy having the option for coffee and/or beer depending on the time of day. The only downside about this coffee shop is that it is becoming very popular so I need to make sure to come early enough to get a seat!

    Amazing place to work, meet a friend for coffee, or grab a bite to eat. Atmosphere is hard to beat with their garage door windows that create an open air environment and ample seating with plugs, modern/clean design & thoughtful design touches throughout. They serve Bird Rock roasters (arguably best coffee is SD - won competition for best micro-roasters in North America) and they prepare it really well. Their tea selection is simple, but high quality. The pastries are hit or miss, but their food made to order is reeeally good (lots of vegetarian options - but for us meat lovers, they totally compensate by using quality ingredients that have a ton of flavor). Of course there are some awesome beers available, I'm not a huge lover of the hoppy beers - for others with this same preference I'd recommend the modern times Lomaland & the Avery white rascal.

    I definitely recommend the Hangar 24 Orange Wheat Ale for anyone who likes fruity beer! I'm not normally a beer person, but it was delicious and easy to drink. The service was friendly and happy even though they had a lot on their plate (the place wasn't as busy as a Saturday-night Lestat's - though I'm banking it will get busier as more people discover it - but it was still a lot to handle). I came looking for the type of place to late-night song-write. This is more of a hang-out social spot, which I would definitely like to take advantage of in the future, but for my first night I was able to stick a pair of headphones on and get in the zone. The atmosphere lent itself well to the instrumental music blasting in my ears. A few hours at Young Hickory gave me a lovely buzz and a brand new song. I highly recommend you bring a couple friends and check this new spot out!

    Hmm. This place reeks of laziness. No sandwich substitutions since they're premade. Repeat, premade. Yet took 10 minutes to show proof of said sandwich. They're not premade... Lies! You don't put honey and Brie on premade sandwiches. Got the coffee order wrong. You had one job to do coffee lady. (Not barista). One size coffee. They were very clear about that when I said the word medium. Good bird rock brewed coffee! They get a star for that! Everyone here was enjoying their waters and the electricity for their laptops. Great profit there! Food was half par and crappy chips with the sandwich were no bueno. Sad attempt. Also you can hear every conversation in here. Bad acoustics for those "studying". So nope. Do not recommend. Oh two coffees and two sandwiches $25. $5 too much.

    I came to YH over 6 months ago, pretty soon after they opened and transitioned from Filter. The first time I came, my experience wasn't great (see original review). After several more trips back and experiences with other baristas, this has definitely become my go-to spot for a strong wi-fi connection, great java (so good you can drink it black) and a chill atmosphere to socialize or crank out some work. This joint gets packed around 6 pm, so get here early if you want a table to work on. Sat and Sun mornings are legit for a light brunch and a few brewskis.

    The food sucks! Asked if I could get a sandwich without cheese and was told the sandwiches are pre-made, so much for being fresh. Ended up ordering the pesky which tasted like the tuna had gone bad. Also ordered a iced mocha and they ended up giving me a Mexican iced mocha. Chai latte and teas taste so good there is no need for sugar. The new decor is way better than what it was before and the girls there are really nice. Hope this place makes it.     This is the place I have been waiting for! I am really, really excited about this coffee/beer goldmine. The place before was also a coffee house but it wasn't really my favorite place. My fiance and I can walk to the location from our house so we would go every now and then but it was nothing I was excited about. We had seen that something new was coming in and we were anxious for it to pop up so we could check it out. Well, we went in yesterday morning and I can't stop thinking about the place...I'm in love. The decor is awesome- they have medicine ball chairs! I love the open floor plan and big windows. They did a good job at making it a cool looking hang out without getting too trendy. So,I am going to be honest and admit I can't really judge the coffee or the beer at this point because we didn't have any. I already had coffee at home and we really just wanted to grab some breakfast. Now, another thing to be honest about was the breakfast could use some work but the owner was completely open to discussing that with us. It was so refreshing. It's obviously a new place so they have some glitches to work out in the kitchen which I get. The Acai bowl tasted reallllly good but I like mine a little more thick. The owner came over and said, "Do you think it's a little too runny for your liking?" we answered back..."yeah it is but it tastes good...we usually like it more thick". He then responded, "Yeah we are trying to figure out the best consistency and will be sure to work on that". I just thought, wow. It isn't every day that the owner will come up and ask you what you think and what you prefer. He chatted with us for several minutes and he was really down to earth. We were also waiting on a bagel breakfast sandwich. When it finally came up he said, "I think that took a little bit longer than it should have". He was right...we were pretty much done with the Acai bowl and still waited about 5 min to get the bagel sandwich. It was just nice that he was taking note to what is important and making sure in the future it gets fixed :) The breakfast sandwich was really simple- egg, cheese, avacado on a bagel...good. I guess to me, even though right now the food wasn't AMAZING the experience and feeling I got being there was and for me, that's more important. Have you ever loved food at a place that you hated going into because they way it made you feel? It's awful. I have faith based on the owners eagerness to hear feedback means this place is only going to get better and better. Not to mention a coffee house that also has beer and is open until midnight...and has plugs at almost every table for you to plug in and get to work. I am very much excited and can't wait to go back.....thank you Young Hickory for coming to my neighborhood.

    I walked in to check it out. I paid for a biscotti and an Americano. Unfriendly barmaid gave me the biscotti, and I sat down to wait for my coffee. A few minutes passed, and I went to the bar to ask about it. Surly barrista guy said "Oh I'm sorry, I must not have called your name loud enough," in a sarcastic tone.     First of all, I should state that I'm not a huge coffee drinker and I do not "hang out" at coffee shops. That being said, I love a good cup of coffee and meeting friends for breakfast. This morning we met some friends at Young Hickory based on their recommendation. What a cool place. It is actually a large space with a good variety of tables and a good crowd...but it didn't feel crowded. Just a nice vibe and an interesting mix of people. The girl behind the counter was nice and friendly when she took our order. They did not have a ton of different coffee drinks like you would find at a Starbucks or some other places, but they had plenty to choose from. I ordered a cappuccino and a breakfast sandwich on a bagel. I'm not sure if it was the way they made my drink, the fresh roast from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters or a combination of both...however it was the best coffee I've ever had. The breakfast sandwich was really tasty and they had a bunch of other choices as well for breakfast and lunch/dinner (really good looking panini's). They also had some killer looking pastries, muffins, brownies and Stone Porter bars. What really set this place apart though was the beer. They have about 30 different beers you can order, all in cans. I'm not talking Coors, Budweiser, etc. Instead it was a bunch of different local and national craft/micro brews such as Ballast Point, Pizza Port, Modern Times, Avery, etc. It was a bit too early for me to have a beer, but it would be a great place to go with a friend (or several) for drinks and a bite to eat. We also got to meet the owner who was an incredibly nice person and who seems to be running a great business. We'll definitely be back and I would highly recommend it.

    Beautiful to look at, the modern decor is gorgeous and refreshes the space. I however dislike that filters comfy cozy space was replaced with very hard furnishings. It used to be all plush couches and throw pillows mile high, now there's not the same comfort. The coffee is good, the barista was friendly. I prefer a more chill place, most times but its growing on me. The cow head and stickers are bomb very unique. As well I love the yoga ball chairs. Would give 5stars if there were a lot more comfy yoga chairs. :)

    Wow. The outside And inside is beautiful. Love the color scheme. I know it's not Easy being new in town. Especially when you take over a old spot For locals. People can judge before trying. Anyways I live in OB and coffee shop hunter and a barista. The customer service was about a 3 both girls seem unenthused. Girls should be stoked and trying to upsets me a pastry or food or tell me what you love! We are new faces are comin in! Go above and beyond ladies. I ordered a cold brew iced coffee. Took one sip. My face make that yuk face. What is with local roasters and their light brew coffee. It's not that good. It's a fad. A 3rd wave thang people like but don't know why. There is a right way to do cold brew a wrong. I suggest trying and playing with a few different beans and find one that is mind blowing. Especially for that price. But Like I said they are new. Welcome. And it will get Better. You will find your grove young hickory. I applaud you guys. And a tip for y'all. Is try a medium or dark roast for that cold brew. Taste cold brew at other spots so you can see how yours holds up! Until next time!

    I used to come here for years when this location was Filter. I'd drive 40 miles from North County SD to eat their delicious Greek salad and study late. So, I was surprised to come here after a hiatus and find a new name, new layout and new vibe. While I loved the spacious floor plan and open/air windows, the Greek salad here was NOT great. Honestly, who in the world wants uncut romaine lettuce in a cafe? I don't know ANYONE who wants to have to cut his/her own salad for 5 minutes before eating it. Also...I counted at most ten TINY squares of chopped onion. And when you do put a huge chunk of uncut lettuce on a plate, make the plate big enough for me to do all the sous chef-work without having everything fall off the plate onto the table...Or, give me a cutting board, chef's hat and apron from your kitchen if you want me to prep the salad myself...Or, give me $2 discount for preparing the salad myself. I take that back...Just cut the salad for me, PLEASE. There is nothing sexy about having to waste a bunch of time hacking at a head of lettuce at a cafe. Come on guys, this place is cute, your staff is pretty friendly and you have created a nice vibe. If you're going to charge $8 for a salad, do me the kindness of cutting the lettuce for me. Thanks.

    This place has pretty reliable wifi, okay coffee, overpriced food and it's usually crowded. I've never had the beer but there is a decent selection. Coffee is one size only and the portion is on the slim side. Most of the people who work here are friendly but what prompted me to write this review was one over zealous worker today. This is the first time that I haven't bought coffee, I purchased the boxed water instead, the cashier/barista proceeded to tell me that he needed to charge me an extra $.30 for not making a purchase of more than $5 and/or paying in cash!!!! For real?!? I questioned it because I pay with my debit card 100% of the time (this wasn't my first time here) and the latte I usually buy doesn't cost over $5 and no one has ever charged me $.30 extra...it's a ridiculous policy and he was extra entitled about it. I can't stand people who leave a bad taste in my mouth. Now I'll second guess coming here to get some work done. Grrrrr.

    My friends affectionately call this place "Young Hick," or just "Hick." As a hick myself, I feel quite defensive when they call it that. But that's just me. This place used to be Filter. I am not sure if it's really better now or not? I suppose so? It's pretty convenient because it has ample seating and serves both coffee and beer, some snacks and sandwiches, and pastries. It's A-okay for meetups or studying (if you can handle a bit of noise), but as far as having good coffee goes...they don't. They do use Bird Rock coffee but essentially negate any benefit that comes with it by executing the brewing terribly. All in all, as a place to hang it's okay, as a coffee shop it's not so much.

    Young Hickory is a good place to get stuff done/study while sipping on some coffee or beer. I'm not the type of person who prefers working in quiet places (like a library or something), and YH has that perfect noise level and atmosphere to help keep you focused without the fear of falling asleep. One thing I like about YH is the huge open window toward the front end of the store. It feels nice having that fresh breeze hit you every once in a while, instead of having that congested, stuffy environment that a lot of coffee shops in North Park have. Need something to keep you going while hitting that grind? Grab a beer or shot of espresso. Need a study break? Grab a snack at the counter or take a walk around the block. It's a great spot to get some work done or just catch up with a friend or two. The place is open until midnight so that's another plus. The only "bad" thing I would have to say about this place is how uncomfortable the seats are after sitting on them for a long time. You're pretty much sitting on wood, so if you're tryna stay at YH for a while, you're gonna feel it down there eventually hah. Other than that, one of my favorite coffee places in SD!

    This place is an ideal cross between a bar and coffee shop. Depending on your mood, you can pretend that it's one or the other. Want to type at your laptop and drink espresso? No problem. Want to chill with friends over beer? No problem. They have a huge range of drinks, mostly beer and coffee, but also a nice selection of Tea Gallerie teas. The food is good too. They have good cookies that are even better when warmed up a bit, and there's real food like fancy grilled cheese sandwiches with potato chips and an herbed tomato soup that's almost more like a sauce than a soup. Breakfast foods are served all day so if you want oatmeal or an egg sandwich with your beer in the evening, go right ahead. This is my absolute favorite place to get work done. They open early and stay open until late. The wifi is always excellent and I've always been able to get a seat. The atmosphere is not so loud that you can't concentrate, but not so quiet that you can't chat with your friends. And they have exercise ball chairs! They're those giant inflatable balls that you find in gyms, but with a chair frame around them. Fabulous!

    I like Young Hickory because you can choose between beer and coffee and the atmosphere is nice. I haven't had any food yet but it looks like they have a good variety to try - someday. It's a good spot to plop down and get some work done on your computer, read, or just chat with friends. The noise level is pretty quiet as most people are doing schoolwork or immersed in their laptops. Can get a little busy at times and sometimes you have to share a table with a few other people, but everyone is pretty friendly. Staff is friendly and helpful - I'll definitely be back.

    LOVE the concept of both caffeine and alcohol. Best pick up ever was purchasing their shirt that reads "COFFEE & BEER, COFFEE & BEER" Pretty much sums up life. Plenty of places to sit, window barstools, large tables, small tables, booths, outlet options - I'm impressed! When I used to study for school, that was always my problem, finding a hot spot to sit at. That isn't an issue here. Free wifi - make sure to ask for the password. Ordered the vanilla latte -- and it was NOT my favorite. But I'm not going to put all my eggs in the basket for just the coffee. That's probably why they have beer. They have mugs, and to-go cup options. Beer options were local brews, will come back to try. They have awesome music playing in the background too. It was the perfect volume for me to focus and read my book.

You will find a bunch of people on the grind at this place working hard on their laptops. There are some socializing, but all mostly with a computer at their table. I always feel productive after I leave this place. We ordered coffee drinks and a brownie. It was delicious. The staff was ready to serve us and offered to heat up the brownie, good choice!     The environment is very cool, big open space with tons of seating. A lot of people were there with their laptops. Went this morning for some breakfast, I got the acai bowl and my friend got the yogi bowl. Both were very good and the fruit seemed fresh and the granola gave it a perfect crunch. The only reason it got 4 stars is because the food took a while. They did warn us when we ordered though so props for that. Parking was also a pain in the ass but that's north park.

    I'm not such a huge fan of this place, but I may just have been spoiled by Krakatoa. I find the coffee astringent and overcooked, their chai over-sweet and with a weird oily, fatty edge to it, and their salads lacking in brightness. That being said, the environment is really nice, hence the three stars. There's good, fast wifi, varied seating depending on what kind of work you'd like to get done and lots of it, and a nice mix of great SoCal daylight mixed with a cozy feel from Edison lights in the back. I personally wouldn't pick this place for working on a regular basis, but it's not a bad stop.

    This place is disgusting. This morning there are two hairy dogs off their leashes, running around licking each other's butt-holes in the middle of the shop while two of the baristas are laughing and commenting on how adorable this canine behavior is. I'm number 9 of about 12 people in line waiting to get a cup of coffee, and after the line doesn't move for ten minutes I decide my money would be better spent at Starbucks. Does the management really think this is acceptable for a place serving food and drink?

    There's not much I can add to the numerous reviews already here, but here's why I really enjoy coming to Young Hickory: - Dog Friendly (they even give out doggie treats) - Fast, reliable wifi - Delicious acai bowls - Interesting, eclectic crowd all times of the day - Open, bright and airy - Great place to work for a few hours or catch up with friends - ROBUST canned beer menu I'm not a huge fan of the panini's (they're dry and sorta bland, in my opinion), but some of the other items like the Lox Bagel with salmon, cream cheese, capers, red onion and dill are absolutely delicious. Very friendly service and always something interesting to watch go by on 30th through the huge open rolling windows. Filter was a cool little coffee shop, but this is a great improvement.

    I really love the sandwhiches here. The inside-out, the snob, and the PB-banana one are all just fantastic meals. One thing: they're rather expensive. Another thing: they're huge sandwiches, and shareable between two diners. Pretty much evens out! My wife and I regularly take-out a single sandwich to split for dinner and it's entirely filling (and tasty!). The coffee is really not great and doesn't quite compete w the neighborhood offerings. I don't drink beer, but the selection seems impressive!

    Young Hickory is fantastic and open til midnight. The place itself is open spaced with wooden tables for you to study at. There are plenty of outlets and the ambient itself is pretty great - it's not too loud, the table's aren't too squished together, and there's no extraneous clutter. I personally really like studying here, as the people who frequent here seem to be pretty focused on doing their work and aren't excessively loud/distracting conversationalists. The place also offers beer, coffee, and other food items that you can buy if you want something to drink or munch on while you're here. There's a relatively wide beer selection here and they come in aesthetically pleasing aluminum cans, and adds a nice touch of personality to the overall atmosphere of the place. The food is decent here, but there are so many other places that you can go to around the area with more bang for your buck. I've had the lox bagels and it's really nothing to rave about - if you're hungry, I recommend that you walk down the street and check out other eateries around the place that are equally as good. Check this place out! This is one of the more unique coffee shops I've been to (mostly because this place sells beer.. but the overall ambiance is so clean and pleasant too!) It's a great alternative to other mainstream coffee shops like Lestats or The Living Room.

    Love this spot in north park... It's very spacious, open, funky and chill. The vibe is very laid back people are on computers, grabbing a bite or coffee.     Well, well, well... Young Hickory... I'm smitten. I walk in and I feel at ease - is it the awesome study music that's at the perfect volume? Is it the friendly baristas/servers behind the counter? Is it the tasty Chai Latte with Soy that you all make for me with love cup after cup? YES, YES, and YES! It's all of those and more... don't get me started on the spaciousness and the numerous outlets. :P I FEEL LIKE studying my butt off here and it's been years since I finished gradschool! LOL Oh, but it's so nice to come here and do some work after work. Almost everyone here seems to be studying their hardest... either that or chatting their hearts out... well, sometimes I hardcore play games on my ipad here while my Mister does work :) Anyway, if you're looking for a place to get some work done with no interruptions... I hope you choose to come here! I was a bit torn between Lestat's and here, but, frankly, it all depends on my mood! (And the time :( sadly, they close at midnight! I wish they were open 24 hours) There's a good amount of food and drink options that have your usual main menu drink items that you'd find at most coffee shops. But does anything on the menu stand out? I haven't tried EVERYTHING, but if I happen to try to find that extra special "something" the next time I check-in, then I'll be sure to update my review! For now, walk in, relax, and get to work! :) treat yourself to some dessert while you're at it ;)

    I get it, but don't get it. Trendy open place in a great location for mainly students to park themselves with their laptops and get cafe food and or beer. I went here because I was in a hurry and on the road. Got the Pilgrim sandwich and an iced tea. They were busy and it took almost 20 minutes. The sandwich had hardly any meat on it but super quality bread. It comes with chips they make and I'm a big fan of that. These lacked flavor and felt a little old. Tea was was average. I think the prices are a little steep here. I paid close about $13 for a skimpy sandwich, old chips and a marked up iced tea. I get why the prices are expensive because kids come here and milk a drink so they can park and use wi-fi. It's too crowded for me and uncomfortable. I had way too many flies buzzing around my face and food because this place is so open. Tough on hot summer days because there's no AC. They do have a cool selection of beer.

    If it's been a while since you've last visited what used to be Filter, then you're in for a surprise (in a good way)! They've remodeled the entire place and it's a lot more spacious now with more tables and seats! And a lot more modern! And canned beers from a wide variety of different craft breweries? That's right! Bring your notebook, sip on your brewskie (or coffee) and get straight to productivity! The owner Clay is one super cool dude and made recommendations on what I should order the last time we visited! Their paninis are damn tasty and hit the spot! Grab yourself "The Snob," which has goat cheese and freshly sliced pears. Tasty? Heck yeah! And to top it off, it comes with some delicious chips that complement the sandwich very well! Great job again on the remodeling Clay! I'll be visiting Young Hickory more often since I'm back in San Diego now!

    This is a great place to study. Even though it's not the most quiet atmosphere they play really great music and it's pretty easy for me to focus whenever I sit there to get some work done. I also love that they have a great variety of craft beer and coffee and food selections all in one place. The ambiance is also really nice. Customer service is great for the most part. Most of the staff include some really cool people. The only thing is that sometimes it's hard to find seating and it would be nice if they added some more items to their food menu but other than that I love coming here.

    I was supposed to meet a friend there and had barely sat down to wait (less than a minute) for him when was approached by one of the staff asking how he can help me. He had a nasty and rude demeanor. Told him that i am waiting for a friend who should be arriving any moment at which time he seemed irritated for some reason and says "i will give you two minutes" and left. I was shocked and then decided to go speak to him and his response was" i am doing my job and if you don't like it contact my manger. He identified himself as "Nick". I decided that it would be best if i left and went to caffe calabria down the street. Will never go to this place again! Customers, do not spend your money here! They don't deserve it.

    This place is rad! My boyfriend and I ride our bikes on 30th quite a bit and this place always seems busy. We decided to give it a try! You order at the bar and have to go pick up your food at the bar, but who cares. Its not the type of place for full service. Tons of people go in there to work on their computers. The long family style benches make it easy to colab with a big group if you have to. They also have beer in cans if that's your jam! We went on a weekend morning for a late breakfast and we were happy with everything about the place. They have a ton of bar seating looking out in to the street so you almost feel like you are outside. Pretty trendy hipster style of place. Definitely recommend!

    The absolute most perfect place to study and/or catch up with a friend. Coffee AND beer?! Two simple items in the world that bring people together. They have an extensive choice of canned beers from all over the world and great coffee straight from Bird Rock. I also like to purchase a boxed water when I'm there just because (it's better). The mexican mocha is frothy, tasty and everything it's meant to be. The iced latte is your perfect pick me up and their hot beverages are also poured into a pretty beverage you might not want to ruin. Still a new establishment, it definitely upgraded from it's past. There are tons of seating and you'll find numerous people glued to their laptops in solitude. I love this place because it is in such a great area and serve everything you need at hand. They also serve food items, which I've yet to try. COFFEE AND BEER. Enough said.

    Tried the vanilla latte and the acai bowl, while my boyfriend tried the caramel latte and the oatmeal topped with blueberries and banana. This is definitely one of the best vanilla lattes I've had, and their acai was also amazing..topped with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and crunchy granola on the bottom.     First of all, I love that this coffee shop (and beer bar) is spacious, airy, and with two huge garage door type windows that are open. I didn't study here but I can imagine this is a great spot since there's so much sunlight, unlike those dungeon looking coffee shops that make you even sleepier. I got a plain americano, their espresso is good! Steel cut oatmeal is great too. I know it seems like a sham that they charge almost 6 bucks for it, but the portion was huuuuge and they topped it with bananas/blueberries with an option to have brown sugar and/or milk on the side. Super filling! The staff is so sweet and patrons come from all walks of life. Pleasant space to hang out alone or with friends.

They sell a nice assortment of breakfast and lunch options plus all the basic coffee shop classics...Lattes, Iced Hammerheads, Cappuccinos and for the average joe, a cup of joe. Hmmm The one thing this place has going for it is, beer. Not Coors or Bud-light, but a very good mix of local and non-local craft beers! The beer menu changes periodically so if you find something you like; take a picture because it might be gone the next time you come through. They are also open late night and offer free Wi-Fi, but what coffee shop doesn't doesn't offer that?

    I almost fell backwards when I walked into this place, I couldn't believe my eyes so I rubbed them twice. Did I read the menu boards right? I can get coffee and beer and a sandwich and a pastry all in the same place? YES!!! I took a good long look at the pastries and it was a hard decision due to the fact that they all looked so scrumptious. I had the oatmeal apricot cookie and shared a chocolate croissant both were very tasty. If I see Mexican Mocha I will definitely tried, so I did and it was perfect! I will be coming back soon to try more things on the menu and also try their happy hour menu. Also they have cute and trendy merchandise for sale, like T-shirts, coffee mugs and those thingies that keep your beer from getting warm or your hand from getting cold.     the girl with the nose ring was a bit rude. She helped a customer and went around the counter to the customer's table to pet his dog while saying "they can wait" referring to us, the people waiting in line. There were only two people. Help us then go to pet the dog! Then she takes her sweet time to wash her hands then talk to her coworker. Cups have lipstick stains and weird black floaters in the iced tea. Miss the old crew of people that worked here.

    What a fun find! My friend and I were in the area with a craving for coffee and this place did not disappoint. I ordered an iced coffee and it was pretty good with an interesting kick to it. We got our drinks to go but I would definitely come back to hang out - it's really spacious with a lot of tables, chairs, and outlets = perfect for studying or catching up with a friend. AND it's one of the few places where you can get coffee AND/OR a beer - I believe their beer selection is bigger than coffee options! Cool right? Options for everyonE!

    Pretty chill spot with plenty of seating options (even on a weekend), decent prices for the quality of food, and good local beers. I had a cup of coffee with my lox everything bagel (which was pretty good), and my friend had a beer with hers. For 2 lox bagels, a cup of coffee, and a can of beer it was $23, which is sorta high for me but I know smoked salmon is pricey (plus it was really good and they didn't forget the capers) so no complaints here. I had a nice late morning/early afternoon Sunday visit with my gal pal. I will be back.

    I appreciated the simplicity yet comfort and practicality of the decor in this late night cafe. I may change my rating if I ever come here again, but I was put off by one of the employees. He seemed to not want to be there and it reflected in his interaction with clients. I was given the wrong thing to drink and didn't notice until after I opened it... Update April 5, 2015: I stopped in again because I thought the last time I was in it was perhaps an off night? My second experience was great. The staff member working that night was friendly and relaxed. I experienced a very different vibe which was good ;) I upgrades my review from 3 stars to 5 based on this more recent experience.

Oatmeal apricot cookie was awesome (I'm always stoked to get to eat oatmeal cookies with no raisins...) and their tea and beer selection is extensive (and unique). I had breakfast here too and while it was good, it wasn't 5 stars (especially when ur competing with north park breakfast joints) What I love about this place tho is that it's open late and is a good place to work.     My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 5 years now. We met in college and initially bonded over late-night study sessions at Filter. We don't live in San Diego anymore, but we visited recently and wanted to check out Filter to reminisce about our kindling romance. Then we saw that it changed to Young Hickory, and I'll be honest that we were crushed. What about our old memories?! Well, the cheap beer made us feel better. Forreal, you don't see these kinds of beer prices in Hawai'i. Their Baba Black Lager was great if you like darker beers that are coffee-like. So many to choose from. We lost our old coffee place, but gained a new drinking spot. At least it didn't get replaced by a Walmart.

    What a hidden gem! As a late night cafe-hunter, this place really ranks high on my list. The menu is limited but quality - I've never heard a bad word about it. I've personally only had a Latte and the Power Toast, but both were excellent. The baristas are always friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is warm and the music is a little loud, but it's mellow. Good place to study. Lots of table space, several outlets, and comfortable seating. One big issues is parking, always the case in this part of town, but this place is definitely worth it

    This place is awesome for coffee. Me and my boyfriend have become regulars and almost always go out of our way to give these guys our business. Though my boyfriend usually sticks with a classic latte, I've tried their americanos, chia tea lattes and iced blend coffee and have been very impressed with it all! We had some extra time the other day and decided to stay and eat some breakfast. Their whole menu is served all day, which is a plus for me because I'm not big on breakfast food. He got the bagel with locks and I got the grilled cheese- both were amazing. We can't wait to go again and try more of their menu.

    My go-to coffee shop to study, do job applications or chat with a friend. Pros -You always feel welcome. I hate a coffeeshop where you feel like you should leave after sitting there for an hour. I can sit (and have) at Young Hickory for 5 hours and never have a problem. -Atmosphere. Cool interior, plenty of seating, a decent number of electrical outlets, and free water and cups. -They have coffee AND beer. Cons -All the beer is canned beer (but it is good canned beer). Would love to see some beer on tap soon. -The coffee is Bird Rock, which I generally enjoy but sometimes the black coffee doesn't taste very good here. -Can be VERY warm in the summer but unless it's an especially hot day, this generally isn't a problem.

    I love coming here to do work. It's a big space, and they have free wifi and plenty of wall plugs. The only issue I have is that it's pretty busy here. Usually I start working on the community tables, then move to a table along the wall with an outlet. Usually takes about an hour. The coffee is great, and they have food, which is really good.     I am always up for trying a new coffee shop, but this is not just a regular coffee shop, not because they serve food but because they serve adult libations as well. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/youn… ) I stopped in early in the morning, so I stuck to the coffee liquids, but I did venture and try their everything bagel with lox. The house drip coffee I had was very good. On the down side, you have to pay 1$ for a refill, however on the good side, the lox I had was very good. Layered was on toasted everything bagel halves, the smoked salmon was of very good quality with a nice balance of a smoky flavor and saltiness, brought together with a rich salmon flavor.     This is a very hipster spot that sells both beer, coffee, merchandise, and food. A lot of people study here so it can get very crowded. I got the chai latte and the acai bowl. Both were okay nothing amazing. Food here is overpriced for the amount of food you get. Parking is difficult to find so this place is kind of a hassle for me. It's a nice place to have a date when its not flooded by students.

    What a cute little hipster spot in North Park! I stopped by this morning because I was in the area and I needed coffee to fuel my day. I ordered a vanilla iced blended coffee and it was about $5. The coffee was good and the service was friendly. I would come back next time if I am in the area because there's plenty of seating where I could read or study. I parked in the neighborhood across the street and the the neighborhoods have unlimited parking. However, you would need to watch out for the street sweeping.

    I love the minimalist set up of the joint, even ironically having wallpaper of a bookcase in the stead of a real bookcase. The coffee is on point, with the cappuccino I ordered being just what I needed this morning. The beer selection is a bit minimal in my opinion compared to places nearby, but a place that sells both coffee and beer in the same establishment can be forgiven for this. The establishment attracts a younger crowd often studying I'll have to update this review for the food, and may even give up that last star as I only had "The Snob," served with kettle chips. The chips did not compliment the fig, cheese, and pear combo of the sandwich, but my coffee was able to offset it. It is hard to base my judgement based on this alone however, so stay tuned SD!

    On the search for a good acai bowl and came across this place. Their acai bowl are the real deal, no sweetener honey needed (although I would've liked some) and you can taste the fresh herb from from the berries. Plus, the texture is thick and not runny like most acai bowls from other places. The atmosphere is very nice for studying or getting some work done. It was difficult for me to find parking though.

    YH is a solid spot for getting work done: low ambient noise, focused people, reliable internet, good food options. The power toast is good but it irks me to spend $5 on a slice of bread smeared with avocado. The breakfast sandwich is also nice and filling and a better deal at $6. The romaine wedges are tasty but feel too pricey. I'd rather eat the oatmeal-apricot cookie from Bread and Cie. Ask for it warmed up--you won't regret it.

    Ah, young hickory, like most of my friend's reactions when they heard the men I was interested in, all I have to say about this place is..."really? that's what you like?!" I have had a few bad experiences here and I swear to you I have given it a true and honest attempt every time. First story of sadness was when my bagel sammy got served to another customer, and I had put my hands all over the bagel served to me before seeing there was no avocado on it. The response when I let them know? "Oh! Your bagel went here!" and then they grabbed it from the other person. I was so scared they were gonna take my handsy bagel and give it to them, but luckily (?!) they didn't. I just got that other- person- breathed-on- bagel. Last time I went, I got a sandwich (add turkey) and iced coffee and it was 18.00!!! That is insane pricing. I am pretttty sure I got overcharged because I was handed a latte and had to ask for the iced coffee :( Emailed the owner, and response was just "don't worry, we'll take care of it." I always think that if someone takes the time to try and interact with their local coffee spot (literally local, it's right on my block), make it worth my while to go back in! There was no invitation to dine again, or anything like that. So, I will go elsewhere.

    Came on a Thursday morning and the place was about half full, mostly with folks on their computers. Street parking was easy at this time. Triple Iced Latte: Slightly acidic but otherwise smooth Iced Chai Latte: Tasted like "Big Train" powdered chai latte mix, which I do like but if you want something home made, this isn't it. Acai Bowl: TERRIBLE!!! Watery with thawed frozen blueberries, strawberries, three banana slices and granola. DO NOT ORDER THIS. This upset our stomach within 2 hours.

    This is a great coffee shop, right in the middle of 30th. I came here after a search of coffee shops and was not disappointed. The first time I went here, I ordered the acai bowl, which is something I have never tried before. For my first acai bowl, it was good. Tasted very healthy. It did take a long time to make for some reason, but I was studying, so I was gonna be there for a while anyways. There are other food options as well, which I haven't tried yet. The second time I came here was to study again. There are plenty of seats throughout the store, but they are always ALL taken. This is a common place for people to go and study for extensive periods of time. They have large tables for group study and tables lining the walls for those who want to have individual study without distraction. There are also outlets throughout the booth tables. Very student friendly, with free Wi-fi as well! The staff is very nice as well and you can keep a tab open for coffee while you study. This is useful if you only have a credit/debit card because they charge extra if your purchase is below $5. The latte is tasty and the tea selection is pretty good. They also serve local beers and pastries for snacks. Some cons: 1. Parking is horrendous, you will be lucky to find street parking 2. There is no A/C, so the door is wide open and often times, there are homeless people kinda lurking next to the door, which discourages sitting too close to the exit 3. Some people stay the entire day, so they kinda take up seating for others 4. There is one bathroom for the entire establishment 5. The lighting is dim, yet if you are facing the window, its also a glare while sitting in dim light I had to point out the cons, but this is still a 4 star coffee shop. If you are in the area and looking for a place to do some work and can find good parking, I highly recommend this place.

    So this has been my go-to place to do work in San Diego since I have been home this summer. This place is awesome with open windows and a lot of space and several outlets. Not super crowded. Music is not distracting. No unbearably high AC. I love this place. The happy hour (beer!) and coffee! Americano is solid. I've had both their apricot oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies which they delightfully toast in their oven. This place is delightful--a serious breath of fresh air amongst all the coffee shops in SD.     Good for solo study sessions with coffee or group hang outs with beer - that is worth 5 stars alone! Happy hour is 5-7 daily with $1 off beers. Lots of canned beer to choose from and new options often. They offer Birdrock coffee so they keep it local. Food menu includes breakfast sandwiches, salads, and paninis. Finding a seat may be a challenge especially during finals, but that is expected. Lots of 2-top tables and a few picnic-like benches for large groups.     Good place to study, hang out, drink coffee or beer. I like that it is not a well known place like lestats so it is not as crowded. They have very friendly employees who seem to enjoy their job. There is many outlets for people to use which is a major plus for me. They're beverages are pretty cheap around $1-$5 depending on what you get, there's a $1 refill for coffee which is a plus if you're studying hardcore. The pastries are around $2 and up. Other food is around $7&up. Today I ordered the chai latte which was amazing, it had the right amount of sweetness and tasted creamy. I also had a blackberry muffin which was ok. I will definitely come back here it is a nice place to do some studying or a nice place to have drinks or coffee with friends or a nice place to read a book. I like that they have big open windows and parking is not that bad you can score a parking spot with no time limit if you drive around. They keep the place clean and tidy. It has a very hipster ambiance. Everyone here seems to be very nice.

    Cute and original coffee house. The menu is easily displayed on a large blackboard behind the counter. Staff is friendly and helpful. They offer baked goods from Muffins, biscotti, flaky croissants and Danishes. Friends tell me they serve a mean cup of Joe, thou I would not know as I am a tea lover. They have a great selection of Teas from tea gallery (local) which are heavenly. My favorites are the black coconut or the French lavender pu-erh. I love the large communal next tables you can sit at with a group of study friends or find a Single table to do your wordy business and everything is nicely spread out.

    Oh yess!! I like this coffee shop... I tried the Mexican mocha, it was very good... And the Acai bowl mmmm super yummy... I like that they have healthy options... Good for studying, lots of outlets, wifi is good. They have lots of tables, but if you sit by the window you will be counter-height so if you get tired of sitting down (like I often do) you can stand up and continue working. The music they were playing was very much of my liking: they were traditional Mexican songs, but with an alternative, modern twist... Not at all mariachi-style (la bruja, cielito lindo I think). I really really liked the music, it put me in a good mood and I got a lot of my work done. I wish it was open 24hrs, I wish parking was more available... But you can't have everything now, can you? Great spot nevertheless, will come back for sure.

    Love the concept of this coffee shop! Who doesn't love coffee and beer?! The combination of both is genius. The best park about this coffeeshop is it's layout. The open windows and wall full of stickers are rad. I love how open everything is, its not too stuffy because there is airflow. By the counter, there is a interesting sign that reads "No Haters Allowed." I thought that was pretty cool. The drinks that I ordered were, -Bird Rocks hot coffee: Tasty and will keep you up for hours! If you need a good coffee fix, I would recommend drinking the black coffee -Vanilla Ice Coffee: Cheap but they fill it up with a lot of ice! There is something missing about this drink. Wished I could taste more of the coffee without it being watery. -Latte: I do not enjoy the lattes at all. Wished it was more up to standards and their art is kinda lacking. -Chai Tea: Enjoyable! I like the flavors, not over whelming. Overall, a good experience! It could get really packed so studying my be hard! The whole idea is there but I wished the coffee was better!

    Been going here since they took over from filter. I've been here probably 70 times as it's been my go-to work spot. I've recently stopped going as it seems they are coasting on their great work space . It really is a great place to study and so I understand why it's always packed. Here's the problem: in our neighborhood, on 30th street- you can't not have cold brew, inconsistent espresso drinks, small sizes, high prices, AND a just ok food menu. Great work space, love that it's open late, love that they have beer; they could do SO much more to make this place better. Even if they just did a good cold brew I'd be here much more often

    Young Hickory has been on my radar for a place to grab my coffee fix early in the morning.. Perhaps my favorite thing about visiting this place was finding a coffee spot that serves Bird Rock Coffee that is a lot closer to my area than visiting Little Italy or La jolla. Bird Rock is one of my favorite local San Diego roasters with great tasting beans. Hickory serves as a place to grab some coffee, beer and some food to meet up with someone or with their free WiFi you can even get some work done on a laptop here. Breakfast and coffee are served all day here. They do play some loud music inside, so if you're looking for a quiet setting, this is not it. Saturday morning and I was in a hurry for a quick breakfast and some coffee. The steel cut oatmeal looked like a good option with a side of some dark roast Bird Rock blend coffee. The cashier was serving as the food person, drink person and taking the money so the oatmeal took quite a while to come out. Although at a steep price of about $6, the bowl of oatmeal was quite big ( yelp.com/biz_photos/youn… ) and had the option of adding bananas, berries, and brown sugar. I'm not much of a berry fan, so I opted only for some bananas. The oats were real steel cut, as some places advertise it and give you rolled instant oats instead. They were thick, hearty and cooked really well. The oatmeal was a large enough portion to keep me going for the rest of the morning plus some, it was delicious. Their coffee was also perfect, it was bold, flavorful and I couldn't get enough. The refills on coffee here are only $1 for another mug full ( yelp.com/biz_photos/youn… ). Young Hickory was a great place to grab a quick breakfast, catch up on some stuff on the internet, get quality coffee and relax. The rest of their menu looks quite decent and they do serve a good option of bites to go with your beer during lunch and late. Because this is North Park, expect a hard time finding parking during the day time and peak times at night though.

    I love the ambiance of this place, also they serve coffee AND beer! Woot! Why wouldn't you want to study here?! Plenty of large tables for big groups who like to work on group projects in public, or even if a bunch of friends decide to meet up. So I never have to worry that I'm going to have a dead in the water laptop....I'm always plugged in! There are seats for one, seats for two, or seats for 5 of your new best friends.     Top 2 favorite remoter work post up spots :) AMBIANCE: open space with plenty of communal and personal seating. My fave is against the wall, in the booth, facing the bar/register if I'm by myself (or with Ninja my pug).     Great if you get just coffee or espresso because the coffee beans are good. They use Kirkland soy milk here so I'm not a big fan of their soy lattes. A great place to hangout with your computer or books though!

    First time here and was excited because I have heard great things. I ordered an iced Americano and was less than pleased when I was charged 30 cents for using my debit card. I understand certain places have minimums (which is actually not legal to do with debit cards in CA) but when you are a coffee shop and a lot of your drink items fall under $5 mark then you shouldn't be charging a fee. That would be the cost of doing business friends. Service was good and the atmosphere was nice but I probably will pick another local coffee shop in the future.

    The first time in yelping from a place. Been here for over two hours when better half and I are getting some serious work done. Grate place, amazing music and good food. We tried kettle chips and the salmon bagel with the Mexican hot cocoa. All really good. Nothing beats a coffee place where everyone else is also deeply immersed in their work and it's a good co existence for all. Only flip side is the nightmarish parking in NorthPark. It took us over an hour to find one!

    Good: This place happens to know my favorite music ever. Bad: During the school year, this place is filled homogenously with what I can best describe as hipster sorority students. Ugly: Today my friend had her phone stolen right out of her bag when she left it for a minute to order something. Her bag was sitting right here at our table when someone snatched it. Even though there were security cameras running, the view of the center table was apparently cut off. Guard your crap if you're here!

    The pesky- albacore sando $9- decent. I dunno for $9 tho. With reg kettle chips. Acai Bowl- $8 with strawberries, blueberries, bananas and granola on the bottom. A-ok. Dirty chai Mexican mocha Coffee is delicious!!! About $4. Extra $2.45 for the espresso shot Allow dogs inside ;))) Bottom line- come here for the coffee, and to study... Lotsa seats available. Oh and they serve BEER!!!! 30 beers on CAN;) no glasses, No bottles, heck yes. HH: 5-7pm $1 off beers. Thumbs UP!!!

    Prior to ever coming here I was never a coffee person. But after trying out this coffee spot, it definitely opened my eyes to the goodness in coffee First off, the atmosphere here is super chill which makes it perfect if you're trying to find a place to study. Young Hickory has a huge opening wall exposing the coffee joint to the streets of North Park. So you get a nice breeze of the outside while you sip on your coffee. Other than coffee, they also have options of different sandwiches if you're hungry and even a good selection of beer that can also compliment the coffees they serve. WHATS BETTER THAN BEER AND COFFEE?! I ordered the hot mexican mocha. My first sip was honestly life changing. It changed my opinion on coffee COMPLETELY. It might sound like Im exaggerating but this place is just that good. The coffee was nice and creamy but not overwhelmingly sweet. At the bottom of every Mexican mocha, there are always these chocolate crunchies at the bottom of my cup. Not sure if they mean to do that but I love eating it! I'm obviously a dessert person haha. Nevertheless, their coffee is amazing and the location is so convenient if you decide you want to hit up anywhere else in North Park. If you are looking for a tasteful "hipster" coffee place to hit up, this is the place to go.

    I have mixed feelings about this place. Great concept -- coffee, beer and lots of comfy places to set and work or study. And lots of outlets for your electronic devices. I'd come back here for that aspect. But I had one of the worst Americanos I've even had and their breakfast sandwich was just meh. Wish they'd up their coffee and food game and I'd be a regular.

    Coffee & Beer? I'm a there! Young Hickory is a great place to study, hang out, and enjoy a variety of good breakfast/brunch food and drinks. Dimly lit throughout, the large windows at the front of the cafe let in just the right amount of natural light. The decor is very hip and well put together. The general atmosphere is very productive and the noise-level is a consistent working hum. Their hot drinks come in mugs with the YH logo on it and the cold drinks come in tall plastic tumblers. There is an extra charge for card amounts under $5, but you can just keep your tab open if you plan on staying longer.

    My group came here on a Monday evening to work on a project. Parking wasn't too bad. Surprisingly, there were more open spots on the main street (30th St.) than there were on the side streets. There are two picnic tables in the middle that can comfortably fit 8 people with laptops each. There is also bar-like seating facing the outside and individual tables along the inside wall. I didn't get a chance to try any of their foods, but they have breakfast items, paninis, salads and some other food options. Drinks-wise, they offer coffee, tea, and craft beer. They serve Bird Rock Coffee and Roasters and Tea Gallerie. I ordered a hazelnut latte and it came out quickly. The noise level was low as most people were reading/studying/etc. I wish they had more outlets - especially for the middle picnic tables. So be prepared for that if you're not sitting by a wall!

    Not sure how coffee and beer goes together in any universe but I guess they needed to create their own niche to separate themselves from the dozens of other coffeeshops in the area. That being said, Im really vibing this place. I like the fact that there are garage doors open during the day to give it an open vibe and bring fresh air into the establishment. It makes the room feel larger of a space than it is. There are also a decent amount of outlets and the wifi decent too. It can get packed during the weekends though so watch out for that. Would definitely consider this place when I'm in the area and in need of a place to study.

    Coffee shop? Beer bar? It's both! Last weekend, my study group picked Young Hickory for a teaching planning session. We arrived at noon and it was pretty crowded. We got lucky when two smaller tables opened up next to each other near the register. They staff was great and told us we could do what we needed to make our group fit! We wound up maneuvering three small tables together to fit our group of 10! We were there for a few hours, in which time I had the chance to try their strawberry ice tea and a beer. The tea was recommended because it was the most caffeinated one. It was really good, plus refills are a buck and you can change flavors. As the day went on, we moved from tea to beer! Much to my happiness, they have Stiegl Radlers in the can for $5! Awesome! Perfect low-alcohol beer getting some work done! After five hours of lesson planning, we left for dinner and another beer somewhere else, but came back to Young Hickory at about 9 p.m. This place was even better after dark. The lighting was perfect!! Somehow they found a perfect balance of mood lighting that is bright enough to read/work on the computer! The music was great too. It was also much less crowded at night! I can't wait to come back when I want to get out at night but have work to do! I wish Hillcrest had somewhere like this, but it's worth the short drive to NP!
